The ladders are very sturdy, well maintained by the municipality of Bouillon and safe. It is indicated as a dangerous walk for older people who have difficulty walking. Or if you have a large dog, it is obviously not suitable, but don't be put off, it is a safe walk.

Then you walk towards the village and there you will soon see the first signs. The route is indicated with a red rectangle and the number 43. You walk out of the Rue des Moisson and then into Chemin des Falloises. Then keep right and take the Voie de Remifontaine. The entire route is well signposted so you can't go wrong.
The Ladder walk only really starts at the warning sign. It says "dangerous walk: not recommended for sensitive people". The translation into Dutch is not entirely correct, but the meaning is clear. If you have difficulty walking, are afraid of heights and have a fearful disposition, turn around. But we just keep going and soon you have to go down a bizarre staircase. This consists entirely of tree roots. It is a really steep staircase and be careful here and help each other because there is no vegetation to hold on to. Now you know what to expect!
After this ladder there are more waiting for you. While climbing you will be treated to beautiful views in countless places. The panorama of the Semois valley is really beautiful. When climbing you also notice that the forest becomes denser. So keep a close eye on protruding branches. Sometimes the forest path goes down a bit and then suddenly goes steeply up again. There are a total of 4 ladders that take you higher and higher. At a certain point you will see the warning sign again and you are at the end of the ladder walk. The last part of the walk is easy and takes you back to the center of Rochehaut over flat terrain.

The ladder walk in Rochehaut is really something for adventurous hikers! You have to overcome various steep rock walls by using ladders. This walk, also called Les Échelles de Rochehaut, is one of the nicest and most spectacular walks in the Ardennes. It really is a super fun walk that you simply must do. There is nothing comparable anywhere else in the Ardennes.
So do it!
The forest path towards the banks of the Semois is strewn with rocks and roots. It is therefore wise to wear good walking shoes. This gives you good grip and you really need that, especially in autumn and winter. Once you arrive at the banks of the Semois, an easy part begins. Enjoy the beautiful views along the river. Don't forget to look up, only then will you see how far you have descended. But also, how high you will have to climb again later. And before you know it you have to start climbing.
The climb back up
The best part of the ladder walk in Rochehaut is now about to begin. Because to get all the way to the top, you have to climb quite a bit. The rocks and tree stumps serve as stairs and in some places metal banisters have been installed. Then you arrive at a metal viewing platform. Here you can catch your breath and enjoy the beautiful view. Not much further, the first ladder is waiting for you.
Do you want to take a walk with your child or not?
You can do the ladder walk in Rochehaut with the family, but children must be older than 11-12 years old. If your child is younger and adventurous, they can come along, but I wouldn't do it in wet weather. It's really slippery on the rocks. The ladders are also made for adults and the distance between the steps is quite large. Dogs are also simply not allowed for this reason.
